Social Skills Groups

Therapy and coached play groups for preschool and elementary aged children.

We offer 4 types of friendship groups. They include 1) Wally's Club Therapy Groups; 2) Wally's Play Groups; 3) Wally's Summer Camp; 4) Groups for Home School Families. All are comprised of children who are of similar age and grade. With the exception of summer camp, they each meet weekly for one hour. In all four groups, our curriculum will touch on some or all of the following topics:

  • How to enter a group.
  • How to identify feelings in themselves and in others.
  • How to regulate energy and emotions.
  • How to initiate a back and forth conversation.
  • How to share and take turns.
  • How to play and work cooperatively with others.
  • How to successfully problem solve.
  • How to consider the appropriate size of a problem and match the size of the reaction.
  • How to confidently and competently participate in a group.

Wally's Club Therapy Groups

We begin each group with coached floor play followed by a formal evidenced based curriculum. The average group has eight children and is led by two or more facilitators. This is considered a group therapy intervention program and is sometimes covered by insurance providers.

There are no therapy groups meeting during the 2018-19 school year.

Wally's Play Groups

These groups are modeled after the mission and spirit of Wally's Club Therapy Groups. However, they are based less on formal instruction and more on coached floor play involving Wally's Club concepts. These sessions are led by an experienced social skills group leader but are not considered therapy groups.
Currently Full for the 2018/2019 school year

Groups For Homeschool Families

Support for Families and Schools

Sibshops are lively, action-packed  workshops that provide support and guidance to siblings of children with special developmental or medical needs. Celebrating the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs, the Sibshop model mixes connecting with others, discussion, information and fun activities such as games, art, music, and more. Participants get to meet other sibs (often for the first time) and freely talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sib with special needs.  They also learn something about the services their brothers and sister receive, and have some more fun!

Sibshops are open to typically developing children ages 6-14 who have a brother or sister with special needs.

These groups are facilitated by Karrin Grutz, BA and Ursula Schwenn, MSW
